The Attack

On Sunday the 18th December 2016, three days from the end of term a PC was infected with a piece of Ransomware which had penetrated the existing defences commonly deployed in the FE sector.

When the college opened on Monday the ransomware quickly spread through the network as staff and students powered on their machines.

They were immediately confronted with a visual representation of files being encrypted.

The defences that were employed across the estate proved to be totally ineffective leading to a complete failure of the IT equipment.
